World Guinness Book of Records™
World’s Largest Functional Rubik’s Cube
A Brief History of The Rubik's Cube
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974, by a Hungarian architect and professor named Ernõ Rubik.
Today, there exists over 350 million cubes worldwide, securing its entitlement as the world’s top selling “puzzle game.”
Why Create The World's Largest Functional Rubik's Cube?
•Since its inception, the Rubik’s has brought joy to the lives of many people all over the world. In 2010, the Rubik‘s cube celebrated its 13th anniversary for 3x3x3 construction.
•In 1982, and ad agency constructed what is now the World’s Largest Rubik’s cube in Knoxville, TN for the World Fair, but it was not able to function as a “solvable puzzle” and display.
My goal is SIMPLE! This display will not only be able to be solved by all those who can solve the 3x3x3 construction, but it will help promote awareness about keeping artistic creativity and academic excellence accessible to our children today in public schools, (ex. New York City).
This cube will also be showcased and displayed to the public.
Setting a New World Record!
Objectives:•To build a 729 sq ft. (9x9x9) replica of the original 3x3x3
•To set the record for the World’s Largest Functional Rubik‘s Cube.
•To raise awareness about education in inner city public schools.
How It All Works...
In relation to all other parts of the cube, the central “yoke,” is the part of the cube centered within, and does not move, but instead holds the vital core middle pieces of the cube.
Note: The yoke will be constructed out of a durable plastic and embedded within the middle part of the cube, which will be 9ft tall by 9ft wide, and center components of the cube will be placed equidistant from each other in 6 directions.
(Ex. Top Face, Bottom Face, Left Side, Right Side, Front Face, Back Face).
The cube is composed of three different types of element pieces. The center piece, edge piece and corner piece.
For the construction of this project, there will be:
•6 center pieces
•8 corner pieces
•12 edge pieces
Each cube piece will be 3 ft long, tall, and wide.
The color combinations for the corner pieces will be as follows: (Front Face, Left Side Face, Bottom Face).
Red, Yellow, Blue
Red, White, Green
Red, Blue, White
Orange, White, Blue
Orange, Green, White
Yellow, Orange, Blue
Yellow, Green, Orange
Yellow, Red, Green
Lastly, for the center pieces, the color combinations will be as follows:only one face.
The 9ft by 9 ft structure will be constructed in Brooklyn, NY.
It will be constructed diligently with each element to match its dimensions on the actual cube. The finished product will be assembled at Prospect Park. Preceding, its finally assembly, the cube will be tested for mobility and functionality with a series of tests.
Once the cube is fully functional, a certified adjudicator will record the new record which will appear in the World’s Guinness Book of Records™. Additionally, the cube will be placed in storage for proper care until showcased in New York City.
